Log Files are now available for download through the Well Files page in new PEPS South Australia.
Well completion reports
DEM Energy Resources Division has a library of well completion reports of all petroleum and geothermal wells drilled in South Australia, of which there are about 3300. To date, all historical well completion reports and related technical reports have been scanned, and now being submitted by explorers in digital format.
The formats of the scanned and digital reports are as follows — the text of a report is in Adobe PDF format, including bookmarking for ease of navigation through the digital document. Larger plans and logs are captured as either TIFF or JPEG (colour) format and linked to the bookmarked document. These large images have not been embedded in the PDF to give companies more flexibility, including plotting or viewing the images in other software packages. All well completion reports are available on DVD (cost per disk) / up to 32 GB flash drive or portable hard drive, or as downloadable ZIP files from SARIG.
Downloads
In 2009, all open file digital well completion reports have been made available for free download as ZIP files (ZIP file sizes up to 400MB). The ZIP file includes the body of the report (PDF) as well as larger plans and logs (TIFF or JPEG) and related reports (PDF) and attachments. Download the well completion report ZIP files linked direct from the online database SARIG.
DVD / 32 GB flash drive
Around 50 scanned well completion reports will fit on a DVD (modern reports can range from 50 - 400+ MB in size) and DEM will provide quotes on application for digital reports. The cost of a full DVD is $100.
Bundled Package on hard drive
All open file well completion reports, wireline logs (see below) and well log displays are available on a removable hard drive for $A2000. This is provided on portable hard drive as the datasets are in excess of 700 GB in size.
The portable hard drive is provided free with the data but with a caveat — data is provided at cost of transfer but recipient must take responsibility to archive/backup the data in some manner of form. Portable hard drives are transport mediums (data can be deleted off them) and are not designed to be permanent network appliances.
General well header information and open file Production data are now available through PEPS South Australia.

Digital well logs and well log displays (paper prints)
This digital well log database, includes field and edit tapes for open hole logs, measurement while drilling and cased hole logs, as well as higher resolution data including dipmeter, formation microscanner, array sonic, cement bond log, segmented bond tool, memory production logs, deviation surveys and vertical seismic profiles. Basic log data continues to be archived to DVD and Blu Ray, total holdings now exceeding 900 GB to date. Digital data are available as basic validated data as originally supplied (EDIT or FIELD processing) or historical data digitised from an analogue source.
- Selected files by well can be downloaded from PEPS South Australia found here https://peps.sa.gov.au/home
- All data are provided in the format that was originally supplied. Pre-1999 data are available in LIS format only; post 1999 data are predominantly DLIS format.
- All data orders now come with log print images. Recent log displays may be in PDS (Schlumberger), META (Baker Atlas), TIFF as well as PDF formats. Historical displays were scanned images (tif) of the paper prints.
- Cost of basic log data are derived from the cost of transfer. These data are now available on DVD (cost per disk) / up to 32 GB flash drive or portable hard drive for larger orders.

Core photos
Energy Resource Division has scanned all petroleum core photographs and full size digital images (~1500 pixels by 1000 pixels by 256 colours) have been captured. Currently available on SARIG (3.3 GB)
Thin sections
Energy Resource Division is the custodian of over 6000 thin sections, prepared over the last 20 years for various basin studies. All thin sections have been catalogued in the PEPS database and are available for loan. Over 5500 sections have been scanned in normal and polarised light using specialised software and a scanner attached to a petrological microscope. These digital thin section images have been compiled into a searchable database and are now available for download on SARIG (730 MB).
