Energy Resources has scanned all petroleum core photographs.
The total set contains over 3360 images together with viewing software which links the photo to the attribute data.

Installing Core Photo Images from downloadable file for use with PEPS-SA
- Download Core Photos
- Create an Images folder somewhere on your local hard disk but not under PEPS as you will have to move them when you install a new version of PEPS-SA.
- Run self extracting file (CorePhotos_yyyy-mm-dd.exe) and select the ...\Images folder created in step 2 as the destination folder.
- From the PEPS-SA main menu choose File > Select Images Folder and set the location of the Images folder created in step 2.
- This procedure will only need to be performed once as the software will remember this folder location.
- That's it. When browsing the Cores database the images will now be available. Click on the thumbnail to display a full size image.
Be sure to read the help file to see how to print, copy, zoom, etc.
Petroleum Thin Sections Database
Minerals and Energy Resources are the custodian of ~6000 thin sections it has generated in the studies of petroleum core and cuttings and relevant outcrops around SA. Thin sections are catalogued in the Petroleum Exploration Production System (PEPS) database and are available for loan for researchers.
More than 5500 digital images have been generated using specialised software in conjunction with a petrographic microscope.
These thin sections have been compiled into a module of PEPS database using Borland Delphi 6 software. Images can be viewed as both thumbnails and full screen display.
These digital images form a comprehensive atlas of key reservoirs and seals from SA’s prospective petroleum sedimentary basins.

Winbury Generation and Expulsion Model
The Cooper-Eromanga Basins Geohistory Modelling package presents interactive geohistory models of the regional burial, thermal and hydrocarbon maturation and expulsion history of the Cooper and Eromanga Basins in central Australia.
Cooper Basin Electro-facies Map Folio (September 2004)
Wireline logs from approximately 830 wells were analysed using in-house script known as ElectroFacies. Preset cut-off values were used to analyse the thickness and percentage of electrofacies for the following formations of the Cooper Basin sequence: Patchawarra, Epsilon, Daralingie, Toolachee and Nappamerri Formations. A series of isolith and isopach maps, first produced in 1998 by McLean and Hill, have been further developed by X. Sun and B. Camac (2004) to include recent data and specifically correct anomalous readings. These maps have been produced for sandstone, silty or muddy sandstone, shale/siltstone and coal for the formations analysed. These are intended to provide a general guide for interpretation of Cooper Basin lithofacies distribution and palaeogeography, leading to improved prediction of reservoir, source and seal rocks.
Warburton Basin GIS Data Atlas (2001)
Rod Boucher (Linex PtyLtd) was commissioned by PIRSA using Targeted Exploration Initiative SA funding to bring together Warburton Basin research concepts and data into a comprehensive atlas. This atlas incorporates existing petroleum databases including:
- relevant reports in pdf format
- scanned core photographs
- scanned composite logs
- excerpts from scanned well completion reports
- scanned seismic lines
- spreadsheets of formation tops
- digital thin section images
ArcExplorerGIS projects are also included, with subcrop maps, tectonic and magnetic interpretations, wells, petroleum shows and tenements so key data are readily accessible via GIS front ends.
The dataset aims to provide company geologists and mud loggers in an office or mud logging truck on a wellsite with sufficient information to quickly and accurately identify Warburton Basin rock units. It was compiled and developed in-house for Rod Boucher by PIRSA Petroleum Group and Publishing Services.
The compilation represents many years of work by FrOG Tech in Australia in the petroleum, mineral and coal sectors. The result is a model of the geological evolution of the Phanerozoic Basins that is summarised in this GIS and report.
